Celebrating 40 Years

Celebrating 40 Years

This blog I am about to write may be one of the most significant ones I’ve ever written. Last night our family played a social game where one of the questions was “things you shouldn’t celebrate.” Well I’m about to tell you about something that definitely needs celebrating. My husband and I are celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary on June 6. That’s a long time! The more I think about it, I can’t believe it.

I have to admit, there have been some anniversaries when I’ve gone to purchase a card and couldn’t find anything I liked because I was mad at my husband. I am glad that this year is not one of those times. I am very grateful that by God’s grace we are alive and can rejoice in this special day.

We’re not going anywhere special, so I began to think about creative ways we could celebrate here at home and came up with this idea. We are going to do 40 things that we enjoyed doing over the years or things we’ve never done before and record them. Of course, the trick is trying to remember what some of those significant events are. My husband says we are going to get fat again because so many of those memories come from food! Then my new daughter-in-law said that I need to blog about them. So today is my first blog.

Beginning today through June we will try to share many of these significant memories with you. I know that many of them are going to be small, but meaningful and maybe spontaneous. Today we experienced our first spontaneous memory.

The older I get the more I appreciate routine in my life. Lately, we have been going to California Pizza every Sunday after church for lunch at Barton Creek Mall in Austin, Texas. We sit at the bar, order the same salad (without avocado), watch TV and play Words with Friends while we’re waiting for our meal. We’ve become good friends with the staff since we come in every week. Today, Matt (the manager) comped our meal and treated us to a fantastic piece of Red Velvet Cake to help us celebrate. It was so delicious and quite unexpected.

Matt and Con had no idea that Red Velvet Cake is one of our southern favorites. The first time I had this cake was when I was living in the dormitory at Auburn University shortly before meeting my husband in 1969, a very romantic time in my life. I have a recipe for this delight in my cookbook but I never make it since it is quite a labor of love. Thank you California Pizza for being #1 on our 40-year list.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what turns up on our list of memories and adventures. Forty is a long list. I know this will force us to think back and appreciate the love that God has given us and show us how we have grown. Stay tuned for more to come.

  1. Hi Carol,

Congratulations to you and Bob on 40 years of marriage. You have a beautiful family. It was my privilege to be able to visit you in Austin in March 2010.
