The Hunt for Peaches

The Hunt for Peaches

One of our family’s traditions during June or July is to make our famous Sims Fresh Peach Pie. If you’re not in a generous mood when making this delicious pie, keep your pie making plans a secret or you’d better be prepared for uninvited company from other family members who heard about it through the grapevine. When you need peaches, what a great excuse to take a staycation day trip to one of our favorite nearby German Texas towns —Fredericksburg, Texas. It’s a beautiful drive through the hill country 85 miles from Austin and a fun place to eat lunch and shop in unique clothing boutiques.

While we were getting dressed, my husband said, “Why don’t we leave early so we can eat breakfast in Frederickburg?” Of course, I knew right away where he was referring to—Rather Sweet, a quaint cafe tucked in the back of a courtyard at 249 E. Main Street. So I hurried, and we headed out so we could enjoy a few hours of the below 90˚ weather before it turned 100˚.

We shared the most delicious scones—peach, blueberry, and bacon, cheese, vegi. We were pleasantly surprised to meet Rebecca Rather, owner and author of several cookbooks. She had been working in her garden watering the tomato plants that you get to enjoy when you eat breakfast or lunch at her restaurant. After shopping we returned for a refreshing lunch before heading back to Austin.

I enjoyed shopping in my favorite clothing store—The Habedashery, a vintage-modern boutique on Main Street.

Unfortunately we discovered there were no peaches grown near Fredericksburg available this year because of the late freeze. We did purchase two boxes at Bergs and Wild Boar brought over from Pittsburg, Texas along with peach cider. I was happy since I’m sure there are enough for both a secret peach pie and a family one.

I made that pie this afternoon. You can have the first piece. I guess this first one will be the family pie! Check out my blog later tonight for the recipe. It’s also in Tea Treasures and More Cookbook.

I guess I am going to have to come pick up Preston early so that I can make time to have a piece of pie! Jonathan would be too jealous…I won’t do that to him. :)
